We’re often led to believe that to get your hands on the best drinks, it’s going to leave a hefty hole in your wallet.
The savvy amongst us know that most-definitely isn’t the case though, you just have to do a bit of research and know what you’re looking for.
Recently we found that Lidl boasted one of the best whisky’s around and only charged you £13.49 for the privilege.
Now Aldi has added one of the world’s best rums to their shelves and it comes in at a fraction of the cost of its competitors.
The supermarket’s Sea Dog Premium Spiced Rum scooped a gold medal at the Spirits Business Rum & Cachaça Masters.
Sea Dog was pitched up against the likes of Ireland Spike Island Rum (£29.98), Atom Brands Rumbullion! Navy Strength rum (£38.99), Famille Naud Master Distillers Hidden Loot Spiced Rum (£28.95), Farman & Son Diablesse Diablesse Clementine Caribbean Spiced Rum (£31.95) and Proof Drinks Cut Overproof Rum (£38.36).
Conveniently, Sea Dog retails for less than all of that list, at a more than reasonable £16.99.
Judges praised the product’s unique notes of sweet vanilla, warming spices, coffee and a citrus lime kick, all finishing with a deep and flavoursome aftertaste.
Amy Hopkins, deputy editor at The Spirits Business, said: “Aldi once again secured some impressive accolades in The Spirits Business’s Rum & Cachaça Masters.
“Sea Dog Premium Spiced Rum was praised for its buttery sweetness, whilst Old HopkingSpiced Rum impressed the judging panel with its balanced sweet and herbaceous flavour.”
She added: “Old Hopking Spiced Rum impressed the judging panel with its balanced sweet and herbaceous flavour.”
The drink has also paid off from a commercial standpoint too.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: “Rum continues to be a popular product with Aldi shoppers, and in 2018 alone we sold over two million bottles of the spirit.
“As more shoppers tap into the trend for creating cocktails at home, we’re expecting another great year of sales.”
