Easter is one of the best times of the year for chocolate fanatics, but what about students on a budget? Luxury high street brands might be out of the question, but that does not mean there aren’t plenty of great sweet treats to munch on!
We’ve put some of Iceland’s budget treats to the test, including their mouth watering creme egg style Belgian Chocolate Easter Egg cheesecake.
We trialed three of their cakes; the Raspberry and Vanilla Swiss Roll, the Belgian Chocolate Easter Egg Cheesecake and the Baked New York Cheesecake.
The Raspberry and Vanilla Swiss Roll (£1) was pretty much what you’d expect – delicious filling in a soft roll. The raspberry was more overpowering than the vanilla flavouring, but overall it ticked the box when it comes to a tasty and cheap treat. It’s a very generous size for the price, weighing in at 300 grams. It arrived very fresh, and kept overnight very well despite being open for another round. For just one pound, there’s pretty much nothing else you can ask for – and it goes great with ice cream.
Next we moved on to the Baked New York Cheesecake (£1.50). This was again pretty standard fare; it isn’t the very creamiest cheesecake but well made and very thick.
It’s a staple desert and for the price is an excellent shout if you’re entertaining guests this Easter, we’re sure it will go down a treat. Alternatively, super easy to scoff by yourself in the flat. We won’t tell anyone, promise.
Finally, the Belgian Chocolate Easter Egg Cheesecake (£3). This is the real treat of the easter range and was absolutely delicious. The layered chocolate on top made the product worth its ‘luxury’ title.
The creme egg middle looks very impressive, though could have done with a more powerful taste as it is slightly overpowered by the chocolate. If there’s one thing we’d of changed, it’d be more of this, ‘egg’ part, because it was restricted to the centre and quite small. For a treat on a budget, you get a fairly decent sized cake, and we’d definitely buy it again.
All in all, it’s well worth a trip to your local Iceland this Easter – and whilst you’re there you can pick up some of their exclusive dinnertime meals to, like the stuffed base cheeseburger pizza.
