Incredible news.

It looks like the season premiere of Black Mirror season five will be dropping on Netflix on December 28th.

Although it has not yet been confirmed, a Twitter user has shared a screenshot which appears to have been taken from official Netflix account NX on Netflix.

In this Tweet, it lists the release dates for a variety of sci-fi shows. Right there at the bottom? Black Mirror, baby.

Has it been Photoshopped? Is someone sad enough to spend their spare time doing that? Yeah, probably. But we do know it’s coming soon.

A Twitter user called Lee stumbled upon the set for one of the episodes back in April of this year.

They wrote on Twitter: “Hive of activity at St. George’s Walk Croydon. It’s Christmas at WH Smith. There’s a Wimpy, Chelsea Girl clothes store, FADS DIY Store, Soleil travel agency, Pizza Hut. It’s gone complete 80s “.

Also, they spotted that several video game props were based on previous episodes of Black Mirror…

In an unexpected piece of news, it looks like Miley Cyrus might be the star of a new Black Mirror episode.

The internet is going wild with rumours.

Marriott Hotels’ Avukile Mabombo spoke to IOL, and claimed that Miley was in Cape Town, South Africa for the show. Mabombo said: “She’s been spotted at the V&A Waterfront but it’s certain that fans will be trying to figure out where she’s most likely to turn up next,

“Will it be at Shimmy Beach Club? Perhaps in an express queue at the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. Your guess is as good as mine.”

Filming for the new season started April in south London and, according to NME, letters were sent to local residents and business owners in Croydon by Ealing Studios (the production company) saying that they were planning to film in the St. George’s Walk area.

Speaking to the music magazine, Brooker recently said: “I can never confirm nor deny anything about season five,

“Season four was literally written around the time of the American election and the Brexit vote and that sort of stuff. I think there was a deliberate, ‘Okay, I don’t see how all of those things will pan out.’ Actually, though, I think you end up commenting on those sorts of things anyway, bleakly. It felt like what we shouldn’t do was go, ‘And here’s the Brexit episode!’, as we would probably get it wrong in the thick of it.

“Also, like anyone else at that time, I was like, ‘Fucking hell! I’m going to keep my head down and fucking write because the world’s about to explode! Let me see if I can type this before a f*cking meteoroid crashes. What’s going to happen next? An asteroid? I don’t know.

“Fucking mincemeat is going to become sentient and start crawling out of packaging and strolling away – I wouldn’t be surprised.”

He may not let on to anything, but he has dropped a clue or two. In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Charlie Brooker revealed that there very well may be sequels to White Bear and San Junipero.

Brooker has recently launched a book, Inside Black Mirror, which features ideas for possible follow-ups to the two episodes.

For the ‘Return to White Bear’, the main character, Skillane, is being tortured every day as a punishment for her part in the killing of a child. However, her memory is wiped every evening and she’s tortured every day for entertainment purposes. Could a follow-up explore her start to become aware of the process?

Brooker explained: “That was something we discussed at the time, as a potential expansion of the story,”What if she becomes aware that this is going on, and starts rebelling against it?”

The follow-up to San Junipero would be slightly different. In the original episode, two women fall in love in a virtual reality where they are young women, but in reality they’re both old and dying. They choose to live in the virtual reality forever, transferring their consciousness into a computer and letting their real bodies die.

Brooker explained: “I wouldn’t necessarily want to revisit those characters, because we’re very happy with where they ended up and their story,

“But that’s not to say that we couldn’t revisit that world, if there was a compelling reason to do so.

“There’s certain stories we’ve done that lend themselves to either continuing on with the characters or, more often it tends to be, you could do another story with that world as a backdrop.”

Talking about his process, he continued: “Sometimes, I’ve got an idea for a story and it’s a hook… and it’s like 15 minutes of story and I can’t work out how to make that a bigger story

“‘Black Museum’, or ‘White Christmas’… I like to think of them as medleys.

“It’s like side two of Abbey Road. Not that I’m comparing us to the Beatles! But it’s like when the Beatles had these fragments that didn’t necessarily add up to a full song. You wouldn’t want to inflate [an idea] beyond its lifespan, but if there’s a way to link them together, they can become more than the sum of their parts.

“So if you look at an episode like ‘Black Museum’, that consists of three separate stories – they actually build on each other… so I’ve got quite a few ideas of that nature and I would like to, at some point, revisit the portmanteau format.”

While Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror isn’t exactly the My Little Pony of TV shows, the Netflix favourite is about to get a lot darker as viewers can pick their own ending.

Ditching its days of DVD delivery, the streaming giant wants to push the envelope further and introduce the idea of “choose your own ending” TV shows. What better place to start than the futuristic world of Black Mirror?

Black Mirror USS Callister
Netflix

Black Mirror has already been at the forefront of dystopian horror, but keen to move with the times, Bloomberg reports that the anthology show will let audiences decide how the story ends for one of Season 5’s upcoming episodes.

Season 4 of Black Mirror was an award-winning spectacle that culminated in the Easter egg-packed “Black Museum”. Brooker has already teased that he could return to some episodes and maybe even a “USS Callister” spin-off, but even better, the site reports that Season 5 is coming in December this year.

Known for episodes like “White Bear”, and “USS Callister”, only time will tell if Black Mirror can top these in Season 5. That being said, the idea of choosing how the story ends is one sure to lure fans to Black Mirror out of pure curiosity.

Although Netflix already tried the idea of choosing your ending for kid’s show Puss In Book, the company wants to test it on a much bigger audience. Horror fans may remember how the clunky idea became ‘popular’ in the noughties and featured on the direct-to-DVD Return to House on Haunted Hill. Here’s hoping Netflix can do a better job.

If the idea is a success, Netflix plans on rolling it out into other shows. Who knows, we could soon see alternate endings to Orange is the New BlackThe Good Place, and BoJack Horseman.

Later Black Mirror episodes like “San Junipero” have been accused of being a little too cheery, so it’s good news that us depressing Dereks can live out our miserable lives in peace.

The twisted mind of Charlie Brooker is dark enough as it is, but imagine a world where there’s any number of alternate endings. We’re looking at the future here people!
