As the Marvel Cinematic Universe prepares to wave goodbye to phase 3 of the MCU, it sounds like the world’s highest-grossing franchise is already looking for a way to replace its original roster of Avengers.
Since 2012’s The Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye have flown the flag of patriotism as the OG Avengers. Proving that nothing lasts forever, the MCU is already working on a New Avengers movie that will feature their younger replacements.
According to We Got This Covered all those replacement rumours are starting to come together. The site reports that the movie’s title of New Avengers is a bit misleading and will actually feature the line-up of heroes featured in the Young Avengers comics. New Avengers features Iron Man and Captain America alongside the likes of Wolverine and Luke Cage, while the Young Avengers is unsurprisingly made up of younger heroes.
For those who haven’t read Marvel Comics, the various (temporary) deaths and retirements over the years mean the likes of Tony Stark co. have seen other heroes take on their superhero mantles. For Iron Man there was Nathaniel Richards as Iron Lad, Hulk had Teddy Altman’s Hulkling, and Hawkeye had Kate Bishop.
Ant-Man’s daughter eventually becomes Stature, we meet the LGBT Miss America, and there’s even a Kid Loki. As for Captain America, everyone from Bucky Barnes to Peggy Carter has picked up that star-spangled shield at some point.
We Got This Covered teases the New Avengers movie line-up will include Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye, Hulkling, Iron Lad, Patriot, Wiccan, Stature, and Vision (not the Paul Bettany one). So far, the only member of the cast seems to be Emma Fuhrmann — who is theorised to play an older Cassie Lang/Stature in Endgame.
13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford is tipped to play Kate Bishop in Endgame, so it looks increasingly likely that the idea of New Avengers will at least be teased in the superhero sequel. It could be time to start waving goodbye to some of our old favourites, which would also fit with Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s Tony Stark spoiler.
The MCU is great at playing the long game, with Endgame reportedly retreading A LOT of familiar ground later this year. As well as revisiting the iconic Battle of New York from The Avengers, Iron Man 3‘s Harley Keener (Ty Simpkins) is set to return.
With such a complex web being weaved over the past decade, it’s only right that studio boss Kevin Feige is planning what comes next.
