Facebook has been planning a ‘dark mode’ in its messenger app for some time, now users can finally access it.
It had initially been made available to select users in certain countries last last year as part of a testing phase. Now it’s available to everyone, as long as they have the latest version of the app installed.
The process for activating the ‘secret mode’ was shared on Reddit.
Send just the 🌙 emoji to anyone (or even yourself).
Tap on the moon emoji in the chat after you send it.
A pop up should appear saying you found dark mode.
Go to settings and you should see it here. https://imgur.com/a/F4GoW5T
Once you’ve sent the crescent moon emoji, a series of moon emojis will rain down over your screen, signalling that the feature has been unlocked and that it can be toggled on or off within the app’s settings menu.
As you’d expect, switching to dark mode turns your messenger theme from white to a much sleeker black and grey.
“One of the most highly anticipated features from the launch of Messenger 4, dark mode is a sleek new look that goes easy on the eyes by switching the background from white to black,” Bridget Pujals, Facebook Messenger’s product manager, wrote in a blog post this week.
“Messenger’s dark mode provides lower brightness while maintaining contrast and vibrancy. Dark mode cuts down the glare from your phone for use in low light situations, so you can use the Messenger features you love no matter when or where you are.”
Facebook says this is a “limited-time only experience”, and that Facebook Messenger Dark Mode “will be fully rolled out in settings in the coming weeks”.
