Just when you thought Tom Hanks was the biggest famous face that could contract coronavirus, along comes a whole host of Hollywood stars to steal his thunder. As well as Thor favourite Idris Elba confirming he’s tested positive for COVID-19, now Game of Thrones legend Kristofer Hivju has also entered self-isolation.
Known as bearded brute Tormund Giantsbane, Hivju originally joined HBO’s ice and fire epic as a wayward wildling in Season 3, but grew to become one of Jon Snow’s closest allies. As well as rumours he *erm* had relations with a bear, Tormund set his sights on the towering Brienne of Tarth and delivered some of the show’s most epic one-liners.
Posting on Instagram, the 41-year-old confirmed he is back in his home country of Norway and is trying to keep his spirits high. Due to testing positive, Hivju informed his 3.7 million followers he plans on self-isolating with the rest of his family. “Greetings from Norway!” said Hivju.
“Sorry to say that I, today, have tested positive for COVID19, Coronavirus. My family and I are self-isolating at home for as long as it takes. We are in good health – I only have mild symptoms of a cold.”
Hivju added: “There are people at higher risk for who this virus might be a devastating diagnosis, so I urge all of you to be extremely careful; wash your hands, keep 1.5 meters distance from others, go in quarantine; just do everything you can to stop the virus from spreading.”
As well as sporting that epic beard as Tormund, Hivju has starred in blockbuster movies like Fast & Furious 8. However, it’s largely for Game of Thrones — and his upcoming turn in The Witcher Season 2 — that people will know him for. Although Tormund survived the harrowing events of Thrones‘ final season, he later confirmed there was an alternate ending for the furry favourite that we’ll never get to see.
Hivju is one of the younger stars to officially test positive for COVID-19. Safe to say, his fans were shocked that Tormund Gianstbane himself could contract coronavirus. Among Hivju’s well-wishers were Thrones co-star John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), who wrote: “Ah mate. Sending my love to you all. Get well. ❤️💪”. Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos Seaworth) said, “Get well soon my friend. X”, and Bella Ramsey (Lyanna Mormont) added, “Get well soon ❤️❤️”.
Sadly, there are concerns that while celebrities around the globe are being tested, what about the general population? We’re praying to the Old Gods and the New that Kristofer Hivju, Idris Elba, Tom Hanks, and all the rest a speedy recovery.
