Friends Cry

Bow your heads in silence and let’s take a minute to compose our thoughts — Friends is officially leaving Netflix. David Crane and Marta Kauffman’s hit show ruled the airwaves for a whole decade from 1994 to 2004. Friends is a staple of Netflix as we binge all 236 episodes, but all that is about to change.

Only recently, The Wall Street Journal revealed how Netflix was fighting to keep hold of its most popular exports like The Office and Friends. The site confirmed that NBC had “begun internal discussions about removing ‘The Office’ from Netflix”.

The current contract expires in 2021, and with NBCUniversal launching its own service to rival Netflix, it sadly means The Office and Friends are waving goodbye to the streaming giant.

According to a press release from Warner Media Group, HBO Max will be the new home of your favourite shows. The streaming service will launch in 2020 and really stick the middle finger to Netflix. HBO Max is also taking over all of The CW’s shows, meaning the likes of Batwoman and Katy Keen won’t return to Netflix after their season finales.

Netflix made the devastating announcement on Twitter, rounding off its tweet with “Thanks for the memories, gang”.

There was soon an outpouring from distressed fans, and to be honest, we stan these messages.

Robert Greenblatt, chairman, WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct-To-Consumer, solemnly declared: “HBO Max will bring together the diverse riches of WarnerMedia to create programming and user experiences not seen before in a streaming platform. HBO’s world-class programming leads the way, the quality of which will be the guiding principle for our new array of Max Originals, our exciting acquisitions, and the very best of the Warner Bros. libraries, starting with the phenomenon that is ‘Friends,’”

The Office is actually Netflix’s most popular show, with Friends coming in second place. Sure, you could stream Schitt’s Creek or Arrested Development, but can anything beat the loyal fanbase of The Office and Friends?

Well, at least we have Stranger Things…for now!
