It’s hammer time as it looks like the Guardians of the Galaxy team is once again suiting up for Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder. With Chris Hemsworth’s long-haired lothario joining the rag-tag team of space rogues on a temporary basis in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, it should come as no real surprise the Guardians will play some part in Thor’s next chapter.
It’s a who’s who of Thor favourites as the God of Thunder will once again be joined by Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and the long-awaited return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. Added to this, who doesn’t want to see the Revengers reform with possible cameos from the likes of Hulk of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki?
The Loki thing is up in the air at the moment thanks to that little trickster zipping off with the Tesseract in Endgame. One thing’s for sure though, Thor will be in good company with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Speaking to ComicBook.com, Vin Diesel (who voices Groot), confirmed the Guardians will play a part in Love and Thunder. The bald brute told the site he’s waiting for James Gunn to “knock this next one out of the park” when it comes to the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Diesel added, “He took The Suicide Squad so he’s about to embark on it. Thor will also, the director talked to me about Thor will incorporate some of the Guardians of the Galaxy.”
Realising he dropped a potentially huge Love and Thunder spoiler, Diesel concluded, “That’ll be very interesting, nobody knows, maybe I shouldn’t have said anything.” Are you really surprised though? The end of Endgame saw the OG Avengers disband and Thor heading off with the Guardians to pastures new. He joked they’d be called the Asgardians of the Galaxy as he left Valkyrie in charge of New Asgard.
How much of a part Star-Lord and co. will play remains to be seen. The most likely scenario will see Thor pootle around the cosmos with the Guardians for a bit and get called back to the fold due to some sort of disaster. We already know Christian Bale has officially signed on as the movie’s big bad, but we’ll have to wait and see who he’s playing.
Otherwise, a fleeting cameo from the Guardians could cue up their own storyline for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. One person probably sitting out Love and Thunder will be Zoe Saldana. Endgame rounded off with the Guardians searching for 2014 Gamora when she bailed on Thanos’ plan and darted off in 2024 — yep, we’re just as confused by the timeline. Either way, Waititi is adding some serious star power to Thor: Love and Thunder with Gunn’s loveable group of misfits.
