It seems that you really can’t get away with murder forever. Shonda Rhimes is bringing another of her acclaimed shows to an end as ABC confirms How to Get Away with Murder is getting the axe after six seasons.
Starring Viola Davis as the frankly brilliant Annalise Keating, HTGAWM has been a ratings hit since it premiered back in 2014. Over the years, there’s been plenty of murder and mayhem, with the show even having a memorable Scandal crossover.
While Oliva Pope made it to seven seasons with Scandal, Shondaland is calling time on Keating a little sooner.
According to E! News, the upcoming Season 6 of How to Get Away with Murder will be its last. Series creator Pete Nowalk left a heartfelt statement: “Deciding to end this series was a brutal decision, but ultimately the story tells you what to do – as it did here.
“For me, Annalise Keating’s journey has always had a clear ending. Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator and I’m grateful to ABC and ABC Studios for the opportunity and creative freedom.
“I am so thankful to the brilliant cast, writers and crew for dedicating themselves to the most rewarding experience of my career over the last six years. I also want to thank our fans. The only reason this show exists is because of your loyalty and enthusiasm.
“I can’t wait for you all to see how it ends, with twists and turns and all the craziness we love to create every Thursday night. Buckle up.”
There’s no escaping the importance of How to Get Away with Murder. Frequently sweeping awards ceremonies, Davis also had the honour of being the first woman of colour to win an Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category.
Don’t worry though, there are still plenty of Rhimes shows to keep us busy. As well as the continuing success of Grey’s Anatomy, there’s also the Station 19 spin-off show. Either way, we can’t wait to see where Annalise’s story goes next in HTGAWM.
After THAT dramatic cliffhanger at the end of Season 5, it looks like there’s another case of murder most foul as How to Get Away with Murder brings itself to a bloody conclusion. Find out more when the sixth (and final) season premiere in September.
