Jim Carrey has not played the Grinch since Ron Howard’s iconic 2000 film, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, but when speaking with Rotten Tomatoes he slipped right back into character.
Carrey is currently on the promotional run for Sonic The Hedgehog, where he plays the villain, Doctor Eggman (also known as Doctor Robotnik, to Sonic purists) and he immediately managed to conjure up the Grinch within him.
The actor had been spending recent years doing more dramatic rolls, and Rotten Tomatoes asked how it was to return to comedy.
“I’ve been doing some serious stuff and then something like this comes along and it’s just an opportunity presented to me by the universe.”
“It’s really kind of fun, it’s really kind of great. It’s a part of me that never leaves – you know, people don’t have to worry that I’m never going to have that part of my brain, that just wants to have some silly fun,”
“It’s really fun when you see a little kid dressed up as The Grinch, or something like that – or they come up to me in the streets and their parent says, ‘You know who that is? That’s The Grinch’.”
As he twisted his face to resemble the character, Carrey continued: “And I go, ‘I must find a way to stop Christmas from coming’.”
He delights in the reaction:
“Their parents go, ‘Oh, I thought it was makeup’!”
So it turns out it isn’t makeup and Twitter is officially shook.
Jim has to be made of living clay!! It’s the ONLY explenation!! 😂😂 It’s so freaking creepy and cool how he can just mold his face like that and back to normal so smoothly!! pic.twitter.com/cMmRkgatKJ— Jake Is Hyped For The Sonic Movie (@Venturian628) February 10, 2020
Turns out he even really resembles the cartoon version of The Grinch:
