If you thought musicals like Cats, Starlight Express, or Avenue Q were a little out there, that’s nothing compared to what’s coming next. In a frankly bizarre news story, Johnny Depp is producing a musical all about Michael Jackson’s glove?
Hoping to be music to our ears, the Pirates of the Caribbean star is lending his talents to help produce the upcoming musical told from the point of view of Jacko’s iconic glitter glove.
Julien Nitzberg has written For the Love of a Glove: An Unauthorised Musical Fable About the Life of Michael Jackson, which has been dubbed “a fresh, revisionist look at the strange forces that shaped Jackson and the scandals that bedevilled him”.
For the Love of a Glove will open in Los Angeles on January 25 and will reportedly feature lifesize puppets of the Jackson 5, Donny Osmond, Emmanuel Lewis, Corey Feldman, and Bubbles the Chimp.
Nitzberg added, “I’m known for writing a lot of biopics. A major TV network wanted me to write a [Jackson] movie … but the question came up [about] how to deal with the child-abuse allegations.”
The story then evolved and Nitzberg made his pitch. The director continued, “I said, ‘How’s this? Everything MJ has been accused of has actually been caused by his glove, which is actually an alien from outer space [and] feeds on virgin boy blood.’ They laughed and said, ‘Can you do the normal version?'”
Nitzberg concluded, “It was morally kind of repugnant to me to do … I turned down a really big paycheck.” He then thought, “I’m going to go back to this … and do this as a musical”, but admits, “We just couldn’t get the financing.” Now, it looks like Depp is putting his colossal Hollywood talents behind the project as it heads to the stage.
While For the Love Glove sounds like a comedic trip through the past of MJ, there’s a more serious show on the horizon. Earlier this year Bohemian Rhapsody producer Graham King acquired the rights to a biopic on Jackson’s life. This is supposed to span his career from childhood to death and presumably follow in the footsteps of movies like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman.
