A budget bottle of whisky costing just £13.49 from Lidl has emerged as the surprise at this year’s World Whiskies Awards.
Queen Margot won ‘Best Scotch Whisky’ in the ’12 year old and under’ category in the ‘Blended’ section.
at the event which sees more than 40 international experts sample whiskies from around the world for the competition.
The World Whiskies Awards is an annual event that recognises the “very best in all internationally recognised styles of drinks”.
Among those beaten by the surprise victor included more recognisable names like Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch Whisky.
Two further stages of the competition are due to take place which will determine the winners for ‘Best Overall Blended Whisky’ and the ‘Best Overall Whisky’. Those results will be declared on March 28.
Lidl’s website says the whisky is “Mellowed for eight long years in oak casks, this whisky is smooth with a rich sweetness and depth of flavour, leaving a warm, lingering finish. The soft aroma of fruit manifests itself as dried apricot and plum.”
This isn’t the first time Lidl has emerged victorious in these kinds of events. In April 2018 the supermarket’s Hortus Artisan Dry Gin won the prize for ‘Own Brand Gin Supermarket of the Year’ at Gin magazine’s 2019 Icons of Gin awards.
