It looks like the joke is on us as the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe rumours suggest Tom Hiddleston’s Loki will return to the MCU for Thor: Love and Thunder. Fans already know the troublesome Trickster God will be getting his own series on Disney+, but the latest reports claim this will pave the way for his dramatic return in Thor 4.
With Thanos’ promise of “no resurrections this time”, a reformed Loki was killed off in the dramatic opening of Avengers: Infinity War. Thankfully, Hiddleston returned for a memorable cameo in this year’s Avengers: Endgame and formed part of the OG Avengers’ ‘time heist’. As the villainous 2012 Loki fled from custody with the Tesseract, it neatly set up his Loki series.
Now, FandomWire claims Loki will lead directly into Love and Thunder. With the Disney+ show set to stream in 2021 and Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok sequel dropping not long after, the timing definitely checks out.
The official description for Loki reads: “[Loki] follows Loki after the events in Avengers Endgame as the trickster uses the power of the Tesseract to travel throughout human history and change historical events.”
According to the site, an insider has leaked how Loki will wrap its first season with Hiddleston’s mischief-maker using the Space Stone to hop through the multiverse from his ‘branch timeline’ and rejoin the main MCU continuity.
It also takes into account Natalie Portman’s return as Jane Foster. Although the brainy astrophysicist briefly popped up in Endgame, this year’s Comic-Con International confirmed Portman will be the ‘new’ Thor in Love and Thunder — taking on the mantle of Mighty Thor.
Comic book fans will know a female Thor is nothing new, but others have questioned how she’ll get her hands on Mjolnir. With the God of Thunder’s hammer being destroyed by Hela in Ragnarok, Jane will be needing one. Captain America took Mjolnir with him at the end of Endgame, but was supposed to simply return it to its original place.
While the cast of for Love and Thunder is far from finalised, we also know Tessa Thompson will be back as Valkyrie. The Revenger will be stepping up as the leader of New Asgard and looking for her queen as the MCU’s first LGBTQ+ hero. We’ve already got our own thoughts on who should be Valkyrie’s love interest.
Even though we’re expecting a bit of a wait before we’ll know if Hiddleston will be part of Love and Thunder, the idea of seeing Loki back to his bad guy best is an interesting one to throw around.
