Steven Avery’s lawyer has promised a “big announcement” at some point today (Monday 9) regarding the Making A Murderer case.
Kathleen Zellner sent out a cryptic message to her followers on Twitter over the weekend, leaving fans of the documentary wondering what the latest development could be.
Avery is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of Teresa Halbach, who was killed in 2005. Steven’s nephew Brendan Dassey is also serving time for the murder.
Netflix’s Making a Murderer documentary aimed to investigate the questionable circumstances surrounding the murder trial, gathering a huge amount of public attention.
The most recent development in the case was bad news for Avery, as he saw his bid for a new trial rejected.
In April, Avery won a motion to appeal the verdict – a development hailed by his lawyer Kathleen Zellner as a “big win”.
The motion to appeal meant that the Wisconsin circuit court reexamined the case over claims that the authorities had mishandled evidence.
Tests were inconclusive about whether Halbach’s bones, allegedly found in the Avery family’s salvage yard, were animal or human.
The bid was based on the argument that the state turned over bones to the Halbach family without notifying the defence. However according to WLUK-TV – the judge ruled that does not mean Avery should get a new trial.
At the time Zellner said an appeal against the ruling was likely, perhaps this announcement could be relating to that appeal.
