Mindhunter Season 3 Has Been Delayed ‘Indefinitely’

And here we are, mind-hunting our own business

Mindhunter S3

There’s bad news from Tinseltown as Season 3 of Mindhunter is reportedly being put on hold ‘indefinitely’. Netflix’s gruesome psychological thriller has been making waves since it first hit the streaming service back in 2017, but if you’re waiting for Season 3, you’d better get comfy.

Delving into the warped mind of serial killers, Mindhunter is based on John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker’s Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. The acclaimed novel follows the retired Douglas as he gives candid insight into the FBI’s “criminal-personality profiling”.

Joe Penhall’s series has proved to be just as gripping as the book it was based on and even secured the talents of Charlize Theron — yes, Atomic Blonde herself — as executive producer and David “Se7en” Fincher as a director.

Sadly, Fincher’s busy schedule and upcoming involvement with Citizen Kane biopic, Mank, means he’s up to his eyeballs in work. Eagle-eyed Mindhunter fans had already clocked this could lead to a lengthy wait between seasons. Now, The Hollywood Reporter confirms it as fact.

Earlier this year, there was a huge development in the Atlanta Child Murders case that Mindhunter Season 2 was based on. To this day, there has been plenty of doubt about the arrest and conviction of Atlanta native Wayne Williams, which has lead to Atlanta police officially reopening the case.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields announce that they will look at new evidence and try to uncover the grisly truth of what happened all those years ago.

It’s unclear where Mindhunter will go in Season 3 (if it isn’t given the chop), but it’s sure to be another shocking look at criminal profiling. We’re no stranger to lengthy waits between seasons. Shows like Stranger Things and Rick and Morty have become synonymous with making us believe patience is a virtue.

Looking at the facts, Fincher is presumably hoping to get Mank out for 2020’s awards season. This means Fincher wouldn’t be free until early 2021, tipping Mindhunter Season 3 for a 2022 release at the earliest.

Looks like it’s back to watching reruns of old episodes then!
