Shiver me timbers, it looks like fans REALLY want Johnny Depp to come back for the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. As the bitter battle between Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard spills over into their careers, there’s a loyal band of supporters that demand Captain Jack Sparrow returns for Disney’s next Pirates outing.

It’s unclear what the House of Mouse is planning next for the long-running action-adventure series, but there are previous reports the new lead will effectively be a female version of Jack Sparrow. Since 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Depp has spearheaded the series as the rum-swilling and catchphrase-spouting Sparrow.

Now, a Change.org petition titled “We want JOHNNY DEPP back as CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW”. Is doing the rounds. At the time of writing, it has amassed an impressive 128,000 signatures. The description reads:

“Even if it means nothing to you but please, sign this petition for the ones who REALLY want Johnny Depp as their Captain of the Black Pearl!

“They have to bring him back to rule the seas again or we will never watch any Pirates of the Caribbean movie without our Captain.”

Depp has become something of a controversial figure, with campaigns to remove him from the ongoing Fantastic Beasts franchise gathering steam — a little hard considering he’s Gellert Grindelwald. While the Pirates petition is a nice move on behalf of the 56-year-old, it’s disappointing there’s no mention of the reported abuse he received at the hands of Heard. While neither side seems to completely innocent, the Jack Sparrow campaign completely ignores Depp’s marital problems.

The studio sort of tried this with the lackluster Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Starring Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario as Henry Turner and Carina Smyth, the pair represented a younger cast of actors who were presumably supposed to carry the franchise through to a new era. Sadly, the critical panning of the movie ‘sank’ hopes of a sixth movie.

Elsewhere, it’s the complete reverse for Heard. After admitting she was physically abusive to Depp, there’s a similar campaign to remove her from Aquaman 2. There were previous rumours that Warner Bros. could axe Heard’s Mera from the sequel, but now, it’s a possibility that continues to gather momentum.

Although Heard was a huge part of James Wan’s original as the love interest of Jason Momoa’s titular hero, her confession has rocked the already shaky boat of the Worlds of DC. As of now, the petition has a pretty astounding 295,000 signatures. However, it’s important to note Change.org petitions have literally no sway. Who could forget when millions signed their name to have HBO remake Game of Thrones‘ final season.

Basically, if Disney is planning on bringing Depp back as Captain Jack, chances are talks are already well underway. If not, we’ll have to make peace with the fact someone else will be taking to the high seas and heading into uncharted waters with wherever Pirates of the Caribbean goes next.
