Travelling can be one of the most fulfilling things a person can do, it may be a little clichéd but it doesn’t make it any less true.

Leaving your comfort zone and immersing yourself in different cultures, travel is more accessible to the masses than it ever has been.

If you’re clever about it, you can do all of this on the cheap to, especially if you avoid the classic tourist traps and head off the beaten track.

There’s a few important things to take into consideration when looking for your next weekend escape, cost of a meal, 3accommodation and of course the price of a pint.

We all have our own money-saving tactics that could alter this list – you could stick to street food, focus solely on free attractions or stay in a hostel.

To keep things as general as possible, we’ve opted to follow the Post Office City Costs Barometer.

This factors in price estimates from National and Regional tourist offices and average accommodation costs from Hotels.com, based on two adults in a three-star hotel.

It also takes into account the cost of typical tourist purchases while you’re on your travels: a three-course meal for two with a bottle of house win, a cup of coffee, a coca-cola, a beer and a glass of wine, a return bus or train from the airport to the main city, a 48-hour travel card, a sightseeing tour and a visit to a leading museum, gallery and heritage attraction.

When booking flights, use a comparison site like Cheap Flights and aim for off-peak times of year to make the biggest savings.
